Poland and Turkey meets in Menemen with "Kulp"
We have started to conduct the workshop and project about the pottery in Menemen with our guests from Warsaw Fine Arts Academy, Faculty of Design. Department head Prof. Michal Stefanowski (who previously visited us in February 2014 and made observations in the pottery workshops located in Menemen) and his students have been our guests.
In the first day of the event, which is set between 2-10th of November and named “Kulp”, our department head Asst. Prof. Dr. Can Özcan made an orientation presentation for the guest students, as well as the participatory students from our department. The next two days, with the guidance of Instructor Onur Mengi, the group travelled to Menemen and the workshops within there. Returning with a pack of clay, the students will continue their study in the workshop located in our school. It is aimed to give an opportunity to the students a glance of all the stages of the traditional handcrafting arts in Menemen such as design, production, promotion, and sales. It is also aimed to create solutions to existing problems, thus the students can perform their abilities of design and planning under a realistic scenario.
The project also has a side purpose of contributing the intercultural relations. It coincides with the 600th anniversary of cultural and diplomatic relations between Turkey and Poland. Head of the Menemen Pottery Association Ertan Saruhan says of the project: “We will take a stand in the global arena by creating product designs which are unique to our trademark Menemen pottery.”
We will keep reporting the activities of the remaining days until 10th November.
